Cassie Williams, Mental Health Prevention Clinician

Ms. Williams works with students who are experiencing social/emotional issues such as anxiety/stress, sadness, anger, emotional regulation, low self-esteem, organization/time management. She helps them to develop healthy coping skills and build resiliency.

Concord Counseling’s prevention services are designed to inform, educate, demonstrate skills, and reduce risk behaviors in students. Through social and emotional learning, students will acquire the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. Prevention clinicians provide short-term individual or group skill-building sessions to assist a student with a particular concern. Prevention clinicians also provide suicide/self-harm risk assessments and can link families to community-based counseling services. Referrals for prevention services must be made through a school counselor or administrator.

Miss May works with students who are seeking education about preventing the use of drugs/alcohol/tobacco and developing refusal skills. She also works with students who are experimenting with drugs/alcohol/tobacco to educate and prevent them from abusing or becoming addicted. In addition to seeing students individually and in small groups, Miss May often provides substance use education lessons to classrooms.

Students may meet with a counselor through self-referral, at the request of a parent, teacher or administrator or get referred by a friend. 

Students talk to their school counselor for a variety of reasons, including:

• Friendship issues
• Problem solving
• Goal setting
• Academic improvement
• Academic planning/scheduling
• Crisis Intervention

Parents should call or email the Guidance Office for a meeting if they have any academic, social or personal concerns for their child. 

The Guidance Office can help to arrange parent-teacher conferences, small group or individual counseling. School Counselors can also make referrals through the Concord Counseling or outside counseling referrals. 

Classroom lessons are developed to provide models for, and instruct students for skills in career, academic, and personal/social development for all students. Classroom lessons include:

Activities are coordinated to help students plan, monitor and manage their own learning in the areas of academic, career and personal/social development. This is accomplished through individual counseling, small group counseling, parent/teacher conferences and collaboration with teachers. 

These services respond and react to the immediate needs of students in terms of a crisis in the school, family or community. Services can include 1:1 counseling, group counseling, consultation and referrals for students and families.

College Credit Plus Information for New Albany Middle School Students

New Albany students in grades 7-12 have the opportunity to apply for Ohio’s College Credit Plus program (CCP).  This program allows students to earn both high school and college credit through dual enrollment from community colleges and universities.  New Albany currently has agreements with Columbus State Community College, Kenyon College, and Wright State.  However, students can choose to take classes at the college or university of their choice.  Participating institutions determine student eligibility, and admit students based on their college readiness in one or more subject areas.  Taking college courses through College Credit Plus is free.  That means no cost for tuition, books or fees if you attend a public school in Ohio.  If you are homeschooled or choose to attend a private college there may be some associated costs.  Information about the CCP program will be provided to all students in Grades 6-11 and their parents prior to February 1st each year.
